United Way Internship Fall Quarter 2012

Hello Dear SB Students, As you are finishing up finals and spring quarter, if you haven’t planned out your fall quarter schedule, check out the internship opportunity with United Way. Below is a letter describing the internship in more detail from United Way’s President, Kevin McCarthy. We’ve had several students over the last couple of years participate in this internship with much success. Remember, it also looks good on your resume and develops your network of people to call on when you are looking to settle down in a career. There will be an orientation to this internship the first day of fall quarter (September 24) at 5 PM in SB 105. Pizza will be served! Get with your advisor and see if this will work into your fall quarter plans.

In the Fall of 2010 and 2011, thirteen and nine La Sierra students, respectively, served at the United Way of the Inland Valleys as Account Executives in return for independent study credits – and they performed superbly.  As part of the program, we provided them with an initial week of training that included public speaking, negotiations, problem solving, account management, customer relations and visits to our agencies.

During the course of their service, they called on decision makers at accounts and negotiated use of best practices, planned internal campaigns, met with campaign committees, strategized with our staff and with local company representatives.  They made public presentations (nearly all of which were very well received).  Several were involved in additional duties as well, including advising us about social media strategies, finance and accounting and improving our internal administrative systems.

In addition, at the end of their internship, each of them wrote a critique of their experience and the United Way systems that they observed.  Their suggestions for improvements have been taken quite seriously and United Way has begun to implement four of their main suggestions.

Below this letter is a description of this opportunity.  Please read it carefully.  If this Independent Study appeals to you, please attend the orientation session [date and location].  To attend, please RSVP to Colleen Scott at the United Way of the Inland Valleys at cmunds@uwiv.org or 951.697.4704.

If you are interested in community leadership and nonprofit business opportunities, please make every effort to attend the orientation.  It may change your life.

Sincerely,

Kevin J. McCarthy
